The Geophysical Exploration Center of China Earthquake Administration (GECCEA) is a national institution specializing in deep and shallow geophysical explorations. GECCEA has ten divisions and a research staff of 400 people among whom 16 are professors, 94 senior engineers and about 200 engineers. She is endowed with great ability for exploration and research work, such as deep seismic sounding (DSS), onshore and offshore explosive shallow seismic prospecting, GPR, electrical, gravity and magnetic prospecting. She is geophysical exploration base for active fault in China, and is a postdoctoral scientific and research station granted by the State Personnel Department of China.

Main research direction: Our research work is focused on a comprehensive study and exploration of the internal structure and tectonics of the earth and deep seismogenic environment of continental great earthquakes, and probe the relationship between active tectonics, physical properties and state of medium, and occurrence of strong earthquake and volcano activity by updated techniques and methodology --with deep and shallow seismic exploration methodology as the main technique and other geophysical means like gravity, electrical and magnetic methods as subsidiary techniques. Aims of our research work are earthquake hazard prevention and reduction, safeguarding people's life and properties, and servicing national economy construction.

      GRC lays great stress on its own advancement with respect to science and technology, and pays close attention to the trend of development at home and abroad. More and more capital is being invested in scientific research projects. At present, she is equipped with a complete set of advanced deep and shallow detecting instruments and a system of data processing software and hardware. She has designed and produced 250 portable DAS digital seismographs of international standards, which have greatly promoted the efficiency and improved the quality of field data acquisition. An explosive seismic database has been set up, which makes data management, application, exchange and display more effective and convenient. A geophysical data processing and interpretation system has been developed, featuring 1D～3Dstructural imaging and tomography with seismic data. In the past decades, GEC undertook and accomplished a number of national key scientific research projects, such as Key Projects for Fundamental Research and Development Program of China (973), National Hi-Tech Projects (863 Plane), National Projects for Tackling Key Scientific and Technological Problems, projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China and some key projects of China Earthquake Administration (CEA). A great many achievements in scientific research have provided excellent services for earthquake hazard prevention and reduction, natural resources exploration, energy source exploration, and engineering construction survey. We have conducted over 30,000km-long wide-angle reflection/refraction DSS profiling, which makes up 60 of the total profiling in China. We have also finished 1,000km-long vertical reflection profiling.

      GEC maintains close links and collaborations with domestic and overseas scientific research institutions and academic societies. It has carried out successful technical exchange and highly effective cooperation with more than 10 countries, regions and organizations, such as United National Development Program, the USA, Russia, Germany, Japan, Czech, to name a few. She also keeps a good cooperative relationship with domestic petroleum companies, the Academy of Sciences of China, Ministry of Land and Resources of China and Earth Science Departments of many universities. All this promotes scientific advancement and development for the GEC. In the new century, the GECCEA-with her specialty and high reputation-wishes to carry out wider and further collaborations and provide better services for domestic and overseas scientific research institutions, and other fields for natural resources explorations, and engineering construction survey.
